CANYON
Written by Jonathan Caren
Directed by Whitney White
February 22 - March 24, 2019
Theatre 4 | Produced in association with IAMA Theatre
What does it mean to be driven by purpose? What happens when purpose collides with ideals? Canyon, a driving new play by rising playwright Jonathan Caren, writer of the Ovation winning "THE RECOMMENDATION," takes a look at what happens when the lives of two families are rocked by an unpredictable accident. We meet a newlywed couple and a Mexican father and son as they all try their best to find a better view. A look at gender, citizenship, and the costs of trying to live a conventional, American life.
“CRITIC’S CHOICE…
[a] sharply observed and suspenseful new dark comedy… shrewd humor,
and the actors take an infectious pleasure in sending up uncomfortably relatable characters
while also making their choices seem plausible throughout the many twists of the plot”
— Margaret Gray, Los Angeles Times
“WOW!… EXPLOSIVE… performances could not be finer… razor-sharp direction… playwright Caren proves himself a master at keeping an audience on the edge of their seats while providing plenty of food for thought. Expect to be riveted throughout.”
— Steven Stanley, Stage Scene LA
“TERRIFIC, TIGHTLY PLOTTED…plungeshead long into the territory of the current time…
played with gusto by a first class cast of superb actors… inspired direction”
— Paul Myrvold, Theatre Notes
“SPLASH SELECTION… A SUPERB depiction of ordinary people
who face extraordinary challenges.”
— Elaine Mura, LA Splash
“[SENSITIVE AND CHALLENGING]… With a kind of diabolical genius,
Caren intertwines all these characters in a whirlwind of secrets, pretenses,
self-congratulation, doubt and accusation… director Whitney White integrates these
six life stories with aplomb… The ensemble is absolutely superb and flawles.”
— Eric Gordon, People’s World
“NUANCED AND BRILLIANT… explores the idealized L.A. melting pot…
well-paced and sharply written”
— Francisco Reyes,Living Out Loud
“VISCERAL… an explosive evening… timely.”
— Leigh Kennicott, Showmag
“POIGNANT… INTRICATE… exposes the dichotomy of those living in
two different tax brackets and two differentskincolors “
—Steve Vargas, USC Annenberg Media
“TIMELY, POIGNANT… no one comes out as a winner, except for the audience.”
— Jill Weinlein, On Stage
“A GREAT SHOW… a ballet of different perspectives
and thoughts… really good acting”
— Patrick Chavis, LA Theatre Bites
