El Apagón presented by Pregones Theatre/PRTT - Bronx, New York
The Latino Theater Company, operators of the Los Angeles Theatre Center (LATC), in association with the Latinx Theatre Commons (LTC), is accepting applications for their Creative Producing Fellowship at the 2017 Encuentro de las Américas: Celebrating Theatre and Art of the Americas (2017 Encuentro). The 2017 Encuentro seeks to establish an active dialogue between Latinx theatre companies in the United States and our counterparts in the Americas. This festival will feature three weeks of artistic exchange, cross-company co-creation, and presented performances in repertory for audiences in Los Angeles. Produced by the Latinx Theatre Commons, the second week will include a weekend-long International Convening of leading Latinx and Latin American theatre makers and invited guests.
Twelve participating companies will join the Latino Theater Company and work together during the three-week residency at LATC to share creative methodologies that will culminate in a performance of a co-created new work. The Latino Theater Company seeks FIVE creative leaders and/or producers who represent the future leadership of the American Theatre. This fellowship takes place Sept 25, 2017 - Nov 26, 2017 in Los Angeles and runs concurrently with the 2017 Encuentro de las Américas.
CULTIVATING CREATIVE LEADERS
While strong leadership is critical to a theater company’s success, there are few opportunities for young artists and leaders—particularly those of color—to learn this specialized skill-set outside of their day-to-day work commitments and the rigor and pressures of their home institutions. The Latino Theater Company sees this need as an opportunity to alter the narrative for arts leaders working in culturally specific or poly-cultural, mission-driven organizations.
The American Theatre needs more opportunities for leadership training that broadens the pool of arts workers ready to take on key leadership positions. Along with other established Latinx Theatres, the Latino Theater Company has made considerable headway in giving a voice to Latinx people and attaining recognition for the canon of Latinx plays. It is imperative that the next generation of theatre leaders are given real-world opportunities to develop these highly specialized skills that will support our collective success. In light of these current realities, the Latino Theater Company is partnering with the Latinx Theatre Commons to offer a Fellowship component to the 2017 Encuentro de las Américas. If you feel called to contribute to this moment in Latinx Theatre history, consider applying to the Creative Producing Fellowship.
